The TURANOR PlanetSolar, the world’s largest solar-powered boat, has just completed the first stage of its journey around the world – a trans-Atlantic journey from Monaco to Miami. Bowers & Wilkins, a well known speaker maker, has unveiled its Zeppelin iPod/iPhone dock. It is actually the remodelled or the updated version of the original which has been redesigned from top-to-bottom and now having the Apple’s AirPlay wireless playback system.
The exterior is the same as with their original release, the only difference is its speaker has been completely redesigned and features new 24bit/96KHz capacity DACs. In fact , this has been dubbed as their best sounding iPod speaker ever.

Let’s talk about this GPS navigator system here, this app upgrade, but first I’ve got to let you know that the upgrade to TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 is only available today on AT&T accounts. Harsh, I know. This update has a list of upgrades, the key components of which begin with Multiple Route Suggestions – each time you bring up your route (or at least the first time,) you get a max of three different suggestions for ways you might go. Click the one you want and there you have it! Quick Search is the next upgraded feature, the user now able to tap the Quick Search box on the home screen and type a landmark, category, business name, or address, this search now also including predictive search technology! Neato!
Speech Recognition is here and expanded, working at a tap from the home page and including many commands such as “How’s the weather?” or “How’s traffic?” We’re hoping it also recognizes “how’s about a milkshake?” Map Overlays are sort of what I just spoke about above with the multiple route suggestions, only there’s one more thing – each of these overlays has information available at a tap. Information like traffic flow, time to get a place, and the locations of traffic cameras. Expanded Points of Interest now include more than 22 million US business locations including airports, historical landmarks, businesses, and basically everywhere else you can dream of.
Hooray for SamsungHub! They’ve got a source that’s just brought them this lovely set of images of what appears to be the new Samsung Galaxy Mini. It’s a cute little device that’s more than likely going to be released at Mobile World Congress next month. It’s number is S5570, it’s got a 110.42×60.76×12.68mm, and it’s green! Or at least one version of it is.
Some more bits: China’s FCC-like agency has certified the device, it’s got a 262K 240×320 screen, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, and microSD card slot. It’s got a TouchWiz user interface and will be running Android 2.2.1. Yes please, thank you. Green will be the color I’d like too – unless you’ve got a yellow one stashed back there somewhere.
Research firm Canalys has released a press release predicting “Android will grow more than twice the rate of major competitors in 2011.” Powerhouse! Canalys notes that Android already claimed a 25% share in the worldwide smart phone market, they with 20 million shipments of the Google-based smartphones worldwide. Casting poisonous words like “fragmentation” aside, Android shipments grew more than 1,000% during the first three quarters of 2010 over the same three quarters in 2009. That seems like a lot to me, does it seem like a lot to you? When you call Android “fragmented,” Android gets ANGRY – you should make Android ANGRY!

Canalys predicts Android will grow more than twice the rate of major competitors in 2011
-Fragmentation will not limit Android growth
Palo Alto, Singapore and Reading (UK) – Thursday, 13 January 2011 For immediate releaseCanalys today announced its projection that Android will continue to grow at more than twice the rate of its major smart phone competitors in 2011, despite market concerns over platform fragmentation and the arrival of the iPhone 4 on Verizon in the US. According to Canalys Q3 2010 estimates, the Google-backed platform already claims a 25% share of the worldwide smart phone market, with over 20 million shipments of Android-based worldwide.
‘The growth of Android has been phenomenal, but so too has the number of related devices launched with different hardware and software specifications,’ said Canalys Principal Analyst Chris Jones. ‘This has led to the market perception of it as a fragmented platform, though we believe that growth will continue as the pace of Android OS upgrades slows.’
Since the launch of the original Android platform in September 2008, many versions have followed. Gingerbread (Android 2.3) is already Google’s eighth update, with its forthcoming Honeycomb (Android 3.0) pad-focused release set to appear on devices in coming months. The platform’s rapid evolution has required increased resources from both device vendors and application developers to support the operating system.
‘The need to differentiate has pushed vendors to create customized user interface overlays for their Android devices,’ said Jones. ‘As additional investment is required to ensure compatibility with each operating system upgrade, this has hampered vendors’ efforts to stay up-to-date with the latest Android iteration on current devices.
‘Fragmentation affects all OS platforms, though it is particularly visible with Android due to the fast pace of upgrades that has characterized its growth,’ said Jones. ‘The problem has been less pronounced on competitive platforms, such as Apple’s iOS, as devices have been able to support the iOS 4 upgrades since the iPhone 3G. Nokia has also sought to minimize its fragmentation issues by utilizing the cross-platform Qt framework.’
Vendors working on Android have leveraged the open source platform to push prices down and bring smart phones to the mass market. As a result, Android shipments grew more than 1,000% through the first three quarters of 2010 over the same period in 2009.
The platform has benefited established vendors, such as Samsung and HTC, but also enabled PC vendors, such as Acer, to enter the market with a broad product range spanning smart phones and pads.
‘Vendors are trying to differentiate further on the hardware front, with faster and more powerful processors, as well as larger screen sizes,’ said Canalys Senior Analyst Daryl Chiam. ‘Last week, LG announced the first smart phone to support a dual-core processor, while Acer and Samsung showcased smart phones with screen sizes of 4.8″ and 4.5″ respectively.’
‘With Android’s momentum expected to stay strong, the installed base of Android-based smart phones and pads will rapidly increase – good news for developers,’ said Chiam. ‘To be successful, developers must be prepared to cater to the abilities of the different device categories, tweaking the user experience of their applications accordingly. This additional effort is well worth the potential benefit of broader application distribution.’
‘To support developers, Google must also make substantial enhancements to the Android Market, including the ability to detect device platforms, highlighting the applications suitable for each, which would improve the user experience and increase the number of downloads,’ said Chiam.
As Alltel continues to expand their smartphone offerings, they have just announced a new Android-based handset for their network, the LG Axis. The device will be an entry-level phone and will ship with Android 2.1.
Other features of the device include a 3.2-megapixel camera, and a slide-out keyboard. Clearly focusing the “teen-texters” market, the device will sell for $89.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate making it a decent option for anyone wanting a physical keyboard.

President Ray Chen stated that the tablet market is exploding, and with it Google’s Android OS. He also goes on to state that now that Windows supports ARM chips, the company may also ship Windows-based tablets, but these were not included in his current forecast.

Sounds pretty prestigious.
This event took place during Google Developer Day Deutschland in Munich, in November 2010. This event was briefly mention in a post we posted yesterday: Android Developers Outline World Tour, but we figured we’d give it its own post. Love it!
If you’ve been keeping up with this epic debacle with T-Mobile and Samsung regarding the Samsung Vibrant, you know that Samsung AND T-Mobile have been accused of holding back a Froyo update from the Vibrant so that they might have better sales of the Vibrant 4G+. These accusations were made by a source inside either Samsung or T-Mobile. The response to this story was a torrent of comments and tweets and all that good stuff on how everyone hated the situation and both companies involved in it. Then it got interesting…
The first big response TODAY (this inside comment came out yesterday) was from a fellow on XDA Developer Forums who said he was initiating a Class-Action Lawsuit against both T-Mobile and Samsung over what he says are unfair and deceptive business practices. After that, there was a sort of response to that (and the Fascinate situation) in the form of a Twitter revolt! This revolt is still going on, of course, and you can find it on Twitter by searching for the hashtag #NeverAgain.
Now here, not a half hour ago, Samsung has responded (to CNET who had asked them for a comment or statement on the situation.) Samsung said thus:
Unlocking is a process wanted by many and dreaded by most. Luckily we have helroz, from XDA, who has developed an application that will unlock your device for you in just a few easy steps that do not require extensive coding.
In order to run the app, you will need to be both rooted with BusyBox and have an active internet connection. The process is simple, you just follow the 3 step process and watch as the phone will automatically unlock itself.

We all know that Verizon is planning to aggressively enter the 4G market with extensive market rollout over 2011, however, we just didn’t know how aggressive they would be – until now. By the end of 2011 they are planning to be launched in at least 140 markets and expect to cover 2/3 of the US by the end of 2013.
That’s a very extensive rollout, their end goal is to offer up 4G service everywhere that 3G is currently available as it’s expected to replace 3G as the standard in the coming years.

Thought the Ideos X5 at CES was impressive? We would have loved to have seen the X6 right next to it, but it wasn’t ready in time for FCC clearance. It’s finally hit those suckers, though, and judging by its looks, it won’t be a stinker – that would make two impressive Huawei devices in a row! This one’s also sporting T-Mobile bands, so it looks like it could be joining the T-Mobile Comet – the less impressive of Huawei’s lineup. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us with this one.
